THE SIMPLE SIGNS OF LOVE FROM YOUR DOG
Love is in the air this month, and not just between humans. Dogs have their own way of expressing affection that’s unique to them. When you come home from a long day and need some puppy love, look for these simple signs that are their way of saying “I love you.”
1. Eye contact.
For many dogs, eye contact is a form of loyalty, trust and affection. If you notice your dog making eye contact with you regularly, they’re showing a high degree of attachment. This can form a strong bond between you and your best friend. When he looks at you, his brain releases oxytocin, known as the “love hormone.” This is the same hormone mother’s release when bonding with their baby.
2. Licks your face and jumps up to reach you.
As much as we don’t love wet slobber on our faces, this is a sign of how excited your dog is to be with you! Puppies typically lick more than older dogs. A dog may also lick in a submissive way to show he’s not a threat. And even though we train our dogs not to jump on others, it’s a way for them to express their excitement that you’re in the same room.
3. Leans against you for support.
When your dog leans against you, it means he feels safe and secure by your side. Sometimes dogs will lean against you when they’re scared and anxious. This means they see you as the protector. This can also be a form of your pup asking for loving attention, so be sure to follow the cues
4. Follows you everywhere you go.
It doesn't occur to your dog to seek out “alone time” like us humans do. If you feel like you have a shadow behind you, know that it’s his social nature to follow. If he follows you into specific rooms, like the kitchen, consider giving him one of our favorite dog treats to return the love.
5. Gives you comfort when you’re feeling under the weather.
Dogs possess an instinct to care for their “pack”, just as wolves do in the wild. Their need to watch over you when they sense something’s wrong is inherent. So snuggle up on the couch when the next cold strikes and let your pup act as your favorite natural remedy.
